Let’s back up and explain ourselves. IMSA is currently riding a large wave of motorsport popularity that started from the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic. The pandemic saw motorsport be the first public events to be brought back to the public. F1, NASCAR, Indycar, IMSA all lead the charge for sports out of the pandemic. Sponsors, fans and teams flooded every series and coalition to hop onto the train of popularity. These things kept motorsports alive in what might have seemed like a dying sport.

IMSA has had a slower rise to the top of the wave. But the motorsport association has made changes and improvements to attract fans, sponsors and teams that just might make this IMSA's Greatest Season Ever. IMSA brought back an old class in the 2023 season, the GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) Class. The association also left behind the LMP3 (Le Mans Prototype 3) Class last year. This left the sport with four(4) classes: GTP; LMP2; GTD Pro; and GTD.

A more simplistic race system is what fans need to understand the sport and be content watching it. Names from all around the world coming to compete in select endurance races such as the Rolex 24 and 12 Hours of Sebring. Bringing names like Jimmie Johnson, the seven(7) time champion of NASCAR and Alex Palou, the most recent Indycar champion will grab the attention of all kinds of fans.

The elimination of the LMP3 class led to more cars competing in the LMP2 and GTP classes. Not only for teams moving to the class and racing with new chassis, but also because there are more opportunities to race now. LMP2 is now as big as it has ever been. The GTP Class gets a new manufacture this year to add the it’s ever growing list of competitors. The two(2) GTD Class (GTD Pro and GTD) grab more teams as well with more teams visiting the series.

IMSA is in for a very competitive year. Racing First will be covering all year long, all news on the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. Keep up to date with all things Racing First and IMSA at racingfirst.club or on our socials.
